It has been decided that due to so much illness in the area, there will be no meeting in the month of March. April will be decided in April. Stay well and enjoy your time off with lots of creativitity.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554983520156143529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3994981801690076388.post-70984551411057151632020-02-22T17:08:00.000-05:002020-02-22T17:08:29.606-05:00

February 2020

Business: No meeting
in May. Mark your calendars…no meeting
in May. Voting took place for the positions
of Vice President, Demo Coordinator, Treasurer and Secretary. Pattie is the new VP, Laurie is the Demo
Coordinator, Cheryl is the Treasurer and Nancy is the Secretary.

Donna Kato’s class has been organized and if you are wanting
to take this class you should immediately get with Cheryl or Laurie and get
your registration turned in and half of your tuition paid now and the other half by
May 1. As of the first week of Feb the
class will be offered to Blue Ridge and realize that the seating is
limited. Total of 20 students for this
class. It is already about half full so
hop on it quickly if you want this class.

There is discussion regarding a course to be offered next
year and Bonnie Bischoff has consented to be available next year for us.

We are still at the moment, up in the air, regarding a place
to hold our meetings. Next month we will
be meeting at the same place we met in Feb.
Each month will be updated as to where our meeting will be held at
present. We are hoping to find a meeting
place that is a minimal cost; preferably free, as our budget is not high. If you know of somewhere that is available
please contact Sally or Laurie immediately with details.

Demo: Today Pattie
was very kind and led us through a technique that is used by Carol Blackburn to
make up extraordinary canes with lots of colors and designs. Thank you so much Pattie for taking the time
to show us all this technique. I expect
we will be sporting some new jewelry with this technique very soon!

October 2019 Meet Up

Business was simple; two instructors are available for
classes for 2019. One is Donna Kato and
her class would involve carving to a degree on beads. The second one is Debbie Jackson and it was
decided that her offerings were meager since most of us are not beginners and
we would desire a more intricate lessons to choose from. Laurie is contacting Debbie to see if there
are other options for her classes. A
quick vote showed there was a lot of interest in the Donna Kato class however
her schedule is limited and that leaves us up in the air for both instructors
that are available. More to come when
Laurie has it and we’ll probably take a vote via email since we do not meet
again until Dec. There is interest in
both instructors and we need to narrow down dates and class choice.

Also make note that if your planning your calendars ahead,
as many of us do, for the upcoming year, there are two changes in meeting
dates. April’s meeting will be on April
18th since there is a retreat scheduled for the usual date we meet
up and also September will be on the 19th rather than the usual
date. Make note of this as we don’t want
anyone not to be aware of the date changes.
The rest of the year is scheduled the 4th weekend of each
month as before.

Class was given by Julie Eakes on making your pieces look
ceramic like with alcohol inks, chalks, various methods to use. Instruction was given on many of these and
there are so many options! Thank you Julie
for showing us this technique. I’m
looking forward to seeing all these new pieces we are creating.
Meeting held at Earth Fare. Business:
It's that time of year again. June is the month to re-up your dues for the year. $20.00 is the amt agreed on during the meeting. Next month we are hoping for a Treasurers Report from Cheryl.

June's meeting will be an egg white batik class with Kathleen instructing us. Supply list will be coming before the meeting. July will be a demo from Robin (from the Blue Ridge Guild) on flower earrings.

Everyone should be thinking about whom they would like to come Demo for us in the year 2020. A suggestion of Lindley Hunani was brought up.

Today's meeting was presented by Sally. She instructed us all regarding the silk screen process. She also brought into the mix stencils as well. Each member was provided a silk screen that Tonja Lederman had sent in. Tonja also provided a code to receive a 15% off should you decide that you would like more of her silk screens. An excellent demo. Hopefully you did not miss it.

Attendees: Sally, Linda, Bridget, Christine, Laurie, Nancy, Marsha, Michelle, Kathleen, and Laura.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554983520156143529noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3994981801690076388.post-84508242560071587502019-01-27T11:49:00.001-05:002019-01-27T11:49:55.830-05:00Jan 26th

Meet up at Earth Fare location with a nice number of individuals to attend. Business: February meeting will be the Maureen Carlson class for two days. This class must be paid in advance to Cheryl before attendance. There are still seats available should you opt to go. The class will be held at our previous location at the Blythe Construction office. Regular meeting will not be happening. There is expected to be a dinner together at a restaurant the Friday before the class. The 22nd dinner will be open to all members even if you are not taking the class with Maureen. This will give you the opportunity to meet Maureen and share a meal with everyone since we are not having the usual meeting in Feb. Laurie is looking into the location for our dinner/meet up for that Friday night. Everyone is responsible to pay for their own meals. Of course Maureen's meal will be taken care of by the guild. Laurie will let us know where the location will be in a future notification. There are still a couple members who have not paid dues for this year. The year goes from May 2018 to May 2019.

Maggie has been having issues with illness and could use any/all communications from all of us. She is expected to be back home shortly. Christine also has been having some issues with illness and may or may not be back home as of yet. Keep them in mind and let them know you are thinking of them if you have the chance.

March meeting will host Linda giving a wire wrap demo. The meeting will take place at Earth Fare.

Heads Up here; the meeting in April is on a different date than we normally meet. It will be at the Earth Fare location and will be held on April 20th since the Blue Ridge Retreat is being held on the 25th-28th.

Laurie gave an awesome demo of doodle flowers. She told us every step she takes to create her goodies. She also had a couple bowls to view using these methods. Excellent demo and she also gave us clues where to find tools she used and of course we all were in awe of the footie material she had used for her texture. Excellent information and a wonderful and very informative class. Great chance for everyone to express themselves using easy methods to create fantastic pieces. Thanks Laurie for taking the time to provide so many displays and choices.

Due to some varying issues, the location of our meeting/party was moved to a new location so we could include Bridget, who had planned to come to our meet up. So, that said, everyone seems to be well and moving forward towards the new year. Laurie had taken Dean into the ER and before the meeting was over; they had arrived back and Dean was ok.

Business: A short but sweet meeting happened where issues of a new location for our next meeting to be held were offered up. I won't say yet that it is a permanent location, as Linda tells me we are trying this new location out to see if it's a fit. New location is Earth Fare Store located on 12235 N Community House Road, Charlotte, NC 28277. After January's meeting perhaps we will know more regarding future meetings.

If you were not at the previous meeting in Oct., there was a vote for a new President for the guild. A two party Presidency is happening for the next (probably two year span) and these individuals are Linda Simon and Sally Wright. As of January 2019 they will coordinate and cover the meetings with our group.

Remember that as of Dec 15th your payment for the Maureen Carlson class needs to be in Cheryl's hands. This is #1 the go ahead for others to be able to sign on for the class if they desire, and #2 we do have a minimum required for this meeting. We of course are looking for the minimum PLUS and if needed, a location that Laurie has secured, could be where we have this class. It isn't that far away and we have just a few more days to make that payment, set our names onto the list. No procastinators!! Class is in February.

Nice gathering for the Christmas goodies and a viewing of Laurie's new studio. Happy Holidays everyone. Those not there....we MISSED you!
Business discussed was specifics and desires for Maureen Carlson class. Remember that the next meeting has been changed to accommodate Cheryl's trip away and will be held on Sept 15th.
Cheryl presented for today's meeting. She gave an extraordinary class on Carol Blackstock's spiral earrings. Excellent class. If you missed it, you miss out!!!

Business: Dues are due and payable Jun 2018. Dues are $15 for the year. New forms will be handed out to each member. Even if your info has stayed the same, please fill out the form for Nancy so she can update the info on our group for the new year.

More info to come on Julie's class very soon. If you know you are going to attend her class for certain, please give Laurie a note saying that so she can get an estimated count for the day. We may or may not have space for others besides our own group.

Cheryl is having some well earned vacation time on the week we normally meet up in Sept. The date of this meeting has been changed to Sept 15th to accommodate this.

It was decided that for future meetings that require an entire day of class, we should bring funds to order a lunch out somewhere and have it brought in rather than carry in foods. That will also eliminate allergies happening for individuals that may have an issue.

June's meeting Laurie will be showing us a Donna Kato technique. Supply list to come later.

Nancy did a demo on Fiona Abel Smith's moonlighted painting with polymer. There was much creativity and beautiful pieces to be shown off. If you missed this demo you are in luck as Fiona has her demo on you tube. She was so pleased to know that it was being shared with you and you enjoyed learning her technique. Fiona is a very talented artist. She loves to see your pieces too, should you photo your piece, pass it on.

Thanks to Michelle for presenting us with a fabulous demo on little dishes made from clay canes, scraps, textured sheets etc. She baked a good portion of her shown bowls using a Wilton pan. She also had a clever little stamp for her initials that she got from "Clay stamp.com". The demo was very full of information and we all enjoyed it. It was a fun class. Bowls in process.......................
If there is someone else out there that has caught your eye and you would like to learn from them it doesn't hurt to put it out there so when the time comes, we know whom you want.
Laurie said she would like to have the years demos filled in by the next meeting. So far it looks like she had hit the mark.

Business: Next month (November) no meet up. December meet up will be the 2nd Saturday of the month. Make note. This day will be for sharing pot luck and great foods (remember that things need to be designated if they have any dairy products or are not vegan or gluten free). We may see some Blue Ridge Guild members. As for claying, it could happen..... usually someone has a Christmas ornament to show off and we usually try to duplicate. It isn't a has to happen though. We plan to party, talk and enjoy! Bring your tools and clay just in case...

Demo was given by Nancy. She showed how to make a burl wood cane and how to put it on the pen kit tubes and while the tubes baked, she showed how to put the pen together. There were some awesome pens that happened. If you haven't seen the pic check on facebook. They are really nice. Great job all. This burl wood cane was a Cindy Lietz class that Nancy had taken, so credit to Cindy Lietz.

Attendees: Maggie, Cheryl, Nancy, Brian, Michelle, Kathleen, Pattie, Christine, Linda, Marcia, Sally and new member welcome to Sarah.Nancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554983520156143529noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3994981801690076388.post-72333717713205269572017-10-20T20:37:00.001-04:002017-10-20T20:38:18.914-04:00

October clay day is for making pens. The guild has purchased one pen kit for each member of the guild. The kits will arrive with me on Saturday. These kits are the inexpensive slim lines and they have many kits to choose from, should you desire to have more kits. I will show you how to make the burlwood cane for the pens. The faux wood seems to be very popular so I thought I'd share that one with you.

We will need minimal amts of clay for this.

Mostly we will use the metallics to get that shimmer we want. Additional highlights of a couple other colors sometimes bring out the wood look so approximate amts are below and all are premo brands. Figure approximately about 1/4 to 1/2 of a section of each of these colors (a square of clay packet has four sections in it).

18 K Gold

Copper

Bronz

Antique Gold

Gold

Pearl

Highlights require even less than the above so grab some scrap of Aliz Crimson, Ecru and Burnt Sienna (Like maybe a pinch of each if you use them).

Bring your usual clay tools

Buffing squares (I have a set and you can use mine if you don't have them) Sandpaper will do also but I like the pads.

A dish to do your sanding in.

A scrap of denim

If you don't want to make the burl wood pen, bring a sheet of decorated clay for your pen approximately 4" x 6. Keep your design small as the actual amt of clay placed on the tubes is probably 2 x 3"

Business: Laurie is looking into a group getting together and going off to Into The Forest. More info to come. Kathleen was working on getting a date for us to have a lesson on photographing our work. More info to come later.
Demo is not in stone yet for the month of September. Laurie is working on it. More info to come. October demo is Nancy with the pen kits. Pen kits have been ordered and there is one for each (paid) member provided by the guild. If you desire more than one pen, these pens can be purchased at Penn State Industries, you can find them on line (I normally go for the less than $4 slimline ones.) If you are bringing a friend, let me know so I can pull a pen kit from my personal stash so everyone has something to work on. I will demo how to attach your clay, how to sand your pieces to smooth as butter finish and lastly show you how to put your pen kits together.
November is a no meeting month as it falls on Thanksgiving weekend and that is an issue for many. December meeting will be the usual party and ornaments or whatever you might want to work on. The date is the 2nd week of Dec rather than the 4th. Make note of this. Keep in mind when you bring treats that there are some with allergies to some food items. I know there are some that need gluten free, some are vegan, and some cannot do any kind of dairy. So, with that in mind, please prepare some goodies and be certain to know absolutely what the ingredients are so no one is getting ill. Label things if you know they have dairy and we can prevent anyone going to the ER!
Pattie gave a wonderful demo on a surface technique for transparent clay. Chalks, pan pastels, silver leaf, gold leaf were all used, and from what I could see before I left, colors were varied and bright and everyone was getting ready to do some carving/cutting and forming. Pattie had shown us several different techniques she has experimented with and brought some finished items as well. Everyone was busy creating and enjoying. Thank you Pattie for being so generous with your time and patience. It was splendid.
